The objective of this assignment is to show different colour relation ships.
- 16 Photographs are required in total.
- 4 illustrating Colour Harmony through complimentary colours
- 4 showing harmony through similar colours
- 4 showing colour contrast through contrasting colours
- 4 Showing colour accent using any of the above.
Below are two slide show which are the original submission for this assignment.
Overall the feedback was positive that I have shown an understanding of colour and used some good visual ideas to express these. That there is creativity shown in my approach.
My tutor pointed out that I have not included information on how each image was taken and that the original slide show did not work well for assessment I have now modified this so that when you put your mouse over each image the information required will come up or click to enlarge the image and the information of how it was taken is seen below.
Image 1 Blue – Orange Complimentary
- Image 1Complementary 1 f 4.0 shutter speed 1.4000. ISO 200.
My tutor has noted that the image is sharp in the fore to mid ground and shows good technique however.
Comment by my tutor that if you squint you can see yellow in this image and therefore it no longer has two colours but three. He noted that for it to work the Orange should have more saturation also.
I have therefore adjusted in Photoshop by studying Scott Kelbys book Photoshop CS4 I have learned skills I was not capable of before.
- Increased saturation and removal of yellow.
The next step was to create a document to support this image. I used open office first which did not allow me to choose exact colours. I have now created a document using CS4 photoshop where I can choose the pixels of the original image and create a diagram with the same exact colours. I have put the Pixel Selection to 11×11 in order to try get a more accurate selection. It is possible in this way to select a precise colour also to save it to swatches and name it for future use.
- Revisited Pg 3 Supporting document.
Image 2 Complementary
- Image 2 Complementary 2 f 1.8 @ 1/500 ISO200 with a 50mm lens.
Here my tutor has said that this is a good colour balance however there is a little green in there. He also noted that on my supporting document the yellow on the page needs to be picked out pixel at a time to get the same colour in the supporting document.
See now improved image.
As mentioned in image 5 Contrast 1 my tutor had suggested stacking two images one soft focus and the other sharp then placing the soft over the sharp in layers (CS4) and erasing part of the soft image to give a small amount of sharp image. The following is my attempt to do so. I am a real beginner with photoshop and so I first have looked at how to bring two images into one layer from Bridge. Then using the magic eraser tool. I have also increased the saturation. I should have photographed this image again and lit up the background however as the point was to improve my photoshop skills I have done everything there. The following are the images. There are still imperfections however it is a good start I hope. Click to enlarge the images. They were taken on a tripod with a cable release. I can see a little shadow created around the edge of the flower which means I need to improve my technique when changing my background. More practice will pursue.
- Before Changes
- 2 Images merged
- Merge Image 1
- Merge Image 2 soft focus.
- Final Image
The final image in the end is reshot as is. It is not a merged image. I believe for a merged image to really work with multiple layers it would be better to do a macro shot and I need to practice my photoshop skills a bit more. Therefore I believe the final image is more successful as is.
Image 3 complimentary 3
- Image 3 Complementary 3 F 8 @ 1/80 ISO 200.
My tutors comments were that this was a good found image. Not again the red on the bucket does not match the red on the document. I had originally designed the document showing the colour relationship balance and movement in Word here I have completed it in Photoshop which allowed me to use the colour picker to match the colours more accurately to the original photograph.
- Complementary 3 supporting document revisited.
Image 4 Complementary 4
- Image 4 Complementary 4 f 1.8 @ 1/60 ISO 400.
My tutors favourite so far. Good saturations and good critical sharpness on the front of the hot water bottle a very well constructed image. Perhaps by not trying to find images on the street I seemed to have more success where they are construed.
I have used the eyedropper tool I put the Pixel Selection to 11×11 in order to try get a more accurate selection. It is possible in this way to select a precise colour also to save it to swatches and name it for future use. This way I have created a more accurate accompanying document.
Image 5 Contrast 1 Green and Violet should be displayed in a ratio of 2:1 respectively.
Tutors comments that it is a pleasing image however there is a lack of sharpness there needed to be one crisp sharp petal in the image. My tutors suggestion was to shoot sharp and then shoot a second image soft and to combine the two. I also feel the below image reflects the colours more effectively the above image appeared a bit washed out. The colour saturation and clarity were adjusted in Photoshop. The image was taken at 1/125 @f/6.3 ISO 500 hand held with a 50mm lens.
- Violet and Green Contrast.

- I have retaken this image two try out this technique.
Image 6 Contrast 2 Orange/Green
Tutor comments “this image just about works” the problem is there is an orange which dilutes it a little. There is a sharpness issue here as well.
My tutor did not have at the time the shutter speed however I now know that as it was hand held and the position was awkward this has caused shake. I am also now aware of zooming in on all my image in order to check the sharpness and have done extensive research on how to keep my images sharp. See links below.

Image 7 Contrast 3
- Image 7 Contrast 3 50mm Lens f 1.8 @ 1/50 ISO 400
My Tutor has described this as a well constructed image. However sharpness is an issue and he notes how my background favours the green, perhaps a more neutral white would have been better.
I have retaken this image with a white background and trying to improve the sharpness.
- White Background improved image.
1/400 Shutter Speed , Aperture f4.0 ISO250 using a 50mm lens.
I have also included the leaves I feel it gives a little more interest in the image. The improved sharpness on the Broccoli shows off better the little mountain peaks on the vegetable which is what attracted me to photograph it in the first place. Originally there was also a little shadow on top of the background I have increased the whiteness of the background in Creative suite to remove it.
Image 8 Contrast 4
Tutor comments: A good found image however the 3:8 ratio may not be exact. The print out again is not the correct colour but the image on blog is. Again I tought the print out was for demonstration of comprehension i did not realise that the colours had to be exact this is now taken on board.
Image 9 Similar 1
- Image 9 Similar 1 Blue and Green peacock.
Tutor comments: A well captured image, nice and sharp no problems here the colours are spot and analogous. The body and neck work really well as well as the eyes on the fan. Great Choice well done.
Image 10 Similar two Yellow and Green
- Image 10 Similar 2 f 7.1 @ 1/40 ISO 400 Zoom Lens 28 – 80mm at 80mm.
Tutor Comments: This image works in terms of colour however lacks quality compared to the previous image. Out of focus image. Also the yellow seem to be moving slightly toward orange.
I have therefore retaken this image trying to create an image that is sharp and where the colours are more exact.
The above image was taken at 1/100 @ f8 ISO 400 with a 50mm lens. I have increased saturation using CS4 Photoshop and also added a yellow tint to the image to blend in the white background. Initially when I took on this assignment I tried to use found subjects keeping my camera always with me and seeking out where I might see colour. To complete it I have realised that planning an image can be equally if not more effective and certainly I find I am more productive. Hopefully from now on when I do find subjects I will be better armed to instinctively shoot the colour in front of me having now created a basis of understanding of the principals of colour.
Image 11 Similar 3
Tutors Comments a really good image sharp and thoughtful. Good composition the colours work well on screen. A little more sharpening is advised at the top of the yellow scarf. Therefore in the second image above I have increased the sharpness using Photoshop CS4.
Again I have also redone the accompanying text. I have used CS4 and the eyedropper colour picker to create swatches that match as precisely as possible the images. I have put the Pixel Selection to 11×11 in order to try get a more accurate selection. It is possible in this way to select a precise colour also to save it to swatches and name it for future use.
Image 12 Similar 4
Tutor comments: Not a successful image. The purple appears more lilac/pink against a pale blue. Purple needs to be darker. Not sharp again.
- Improved sharpness.
Image 13 Accent 1
- Image 13 Accent 1 f 9.5 @ shutter speed 1/125.
As much as I liked the colours of the image above it was not sharp as pointed out by my tutor so I have replaced it with an indoor shot of these peppers.
- Accent Retake
Tutor comments:This is an accent that stands out well, it is a pleasing image and that I have understood the mechanism well however again lack of sharpness. 1/60 at f 3.2 ISO 800 by a window hence the highlights in the peppers to show how shiny they are.
Image 13 Accent retake supporting document.
Image 14 Accent 2
This is the best image of the whole set. The viewers eye goes straight to the blob and you understand it is a dandelion without any text.
Image 15 Accent 3
- Image 15 Accent f 1.8 shutter speed 1.60 ISO 200.
Tutor comments: A lovely image quite thoughtful and uses the colour accent in a very subtle way. Well constructed and good use of light.
Image 16 Accent 4
- Image 16 Accent 4 f 28 shutter speed 10″ ISO 100.
Tutor comments: A vibrant and punchy image the tail lights agains a predominantly green background. Again as I had not supplied technical information my tutor did not have advise on why it is a little fuzzy.
As it is on a tripod with a cable release. I can only think of mirror lock up or perhaps the wind caused a slight movement.
Also there are comments on how my presentation colours did not match the exact colours in the image I was not aware that this was a requirement and so below where there is a new improved version of my assignment and images I have aimed to do this.
Based on my tutor comments I need to A work on my sharpness and I have been working on this. I need to keep working on my blog and creating more links between my assignments and research in order to facilitate clicking around it easier. I have a chronological blog however as he points out that means returning to the home page each time. I am working on this and hope to eliminate this problem in my final presentation. My concept of colour seems OK it is technical issues that I have.
