List symbols used to show the following concepts. Growth, excess, crime, silence and poverty. The point of this topic is that not all concepts can be photographed directly the example given is insurance it is a concept it is not a subject we can see and so it is represented often by symbols. There are pitfalls in this as a photographer, we always want to make an original image however the concept must be easily understood particularly in advertising. We can make a beautiful picture but if the viewer does not understand it then we have failed.
Growth – Small tree or plant. Sprout of seed, small child in school setting, graphs used for economic growth etc.
Excess – Alcohol drug effect shown by person sleeping on street perhaps dressed as if have been out for an evening. Speed in car often shown by crash scene being shown. Obesity by showing overweight people, a table full of junk food burger chips large coke sprawled across a table.
Crime – Shown by guns, masks, knives, blood, broken windows in houses, ransacked houses, person with black eye or coming out of hospital with bandaged arm or leg etc evidence of violence,
Silence – finger to lip, a lake so flat with reflections and no sign of cars or lots of people. A monk in prayer. A person meditating in the pose we all recognise.
Poverty – Dirty hands, a dust laden road with people, Torn clothes on people, Shanty house, dirty water in a village, people so skinny they can barely stand, a picture of someone sleeping on the street.
After having compiled my list I have done a little google research under each topic to see what images came up. Growth was definitely very repetitive mostly graphs were used for advertisements and little plant shoots however there were a couple of interesting themes which I would like to share here.
From website futurity – http://www.futurity.org/test-checks-early-for-growth-condition/
I would like to give a similar concept as we are all familiar with markings on a wall to measure the growth of a child. I would like to do an photograph of a relatively small child marking the wall for their younger sibling. Or perhaps a child trying to reach a counter top by standing on a stool.
Excess is a topic that could cover so many areas that there was no general images. However obesity was shown with a large belly and a measuring tape wrapped around it. Excess salt usage was shown by a person holding a salt cellar and a plate of chips evidently covered in salt. Another topic was excess baggage where mostly cartoon images were used showing people pulling on bags larger than them or sitting on their luggage with pieces sticking out the side.
Excess weight is always a popular one weighing scales, measuring tapes around bellies and pictures of people working out on treadmills are common.
A concept for excess weight which I would like to use is a balance with an apple on one side and a hamburger on the other. With the apple in the air showing it is light and the hamburger weighed down.
Crime, crime scene tape, hand cuffs a judges hammer are all things I found, blood on a knife also.
Perhaps a concept for crime I would use is a fist coming through a broken window indicating a house break in.
Silence there were no suprises here some beautiful images of people with a finger over their mouth, some beautiful scenery images of evidently peaceful and silent spots. Again this is a vast concept and it would depend on what we were trying to promote or what exact message we are passing on to me a person in a meditative pose in a place with no one around.
Poverty this is such a well covered area in photography we can start with Dorothea Lange to Selgado both of whom have taken pictures of poverty however being realistic of standards I chose one simple shot which caught my attention for being different and getting a message across. I think it works because initially you see an image of a pretty girl, you are drawn in by her eyes and then you read the hands which are contrasting in the ugly message which it conveys you are therefor taken by surprise and the thoughts linger in your mind wondering why this image and is this statement true.
